Fixturing and Clamping the Work Piece - Process Planning and Process Industrial Engineering

Lesson 68 of Industrial Engineering ONLINE Course.

Lesson 69. Determining Depth of Cuts for Multiple Cuts - Process Planning and Process Industrial Engineering

7. Positioning Workpiece and Clamping (Chapter Gideon Halevi)

Sections in the chapter

Technical Functions of A Fixture

Three Datum Positioning Concept

Clamping Positions an Clamping Forces

Development of an Algorithm Simulating Design of a Fixture

Conclusions - Economic Considerations in Fixture Design

After selecting the basic process, the first decision to be examined is the clamping points and the shape of the fixture.

If the body has an irregular shape, the support points have to be indicated by the designer on the drawing.

Jigs and Fixtures are built as an accessory to part processing and their function is to hold the part firmly in the machine. Chucks are covered under fixtures in the book by Halevi.

Technical Functions of A Fixture

Three Datum Positioning Concept

Chuck related issues

Three jaw chuck: Only cylindrical segments can be placed in the three jaw chuck. Length of contact between the jaws and the length of the  chucked segment has to be at least 1.2 times the segment diameter. The minimum length in the chuck has to be at least 5 mm. If for any reason the length is less, the free end has to be checked for concentricity and adjusted. The three jaw chuck holding without any other support can be used up to ratio of length to diameter of 3.5.

Three jaw chuck with support is to be used when length to diameter is greater than 3.5 to 6.

Collet gives more accuracy but the part to be chucked in collet must have smooth surface.

Four jaw chuck: it is used for nonsymmetrical parts that must be adjusted for a centerline on the part.

Face plate: It is actually a fixture plate or plate fixture on which with fixture aid any part can be held.

In the book of Halevi, an algorithm is given to decide the fixture required.

Conclusions  - Economic Considerations in Fixture Design

1 Group technology methods (GT)

For a group of components master jig can be developed and adapters can be used for dealing with variations in the components in size and location of some features.

2 Modular Fixturing

The fixture is made up of standard building blocks assembled in a suitable manner.  The blocks are disassembled after use and they are used in different fixtures.

3 Set up time reduction

Setup time reduction is important and certain design guidelines for fixture can decrease setup time. Rotary tables allow machining of the four sides of a cube in one setup. Quick clamping devices, special eccentric cams, slotted bolts and hydraulic or pneumatic clamping etc. are available to design fixtures that reduce setup time.

Abrasive Waterjet Machining - Productivity Science

Introduction - Abrasive Waterjet Machining

Abrasive waterjet machines are introduced to the automotive, aerospace, and glass industries in 1982. Waterjets were first operated in industry in 1970. Waterjets do not use abrasives and therefore cannot machine as many materials as abrasive jets can. Abrasive jets can machine a wide range of materials including composites, glass, ceramics, titanium and hardened steel. The abrasive used to do the cutting is typically garnet and has a Moh hardness of 6.5-7.5. The Moh hardness of diamond is (defined to be) 10.

Abrasive jets provide remarkable accuracy and quality of finish; abrasive jets are typically advertised to be accurate within +/- 0.005in. They can be used for  drilling, sawing, broaching, gear cutting, profile milling, piercing, slitting, spline cutting and blanking,

The advantagesof abrasive waterjet machining.

· Abrasive jets can cut through any material softer than garnet.

· The finish of high quality and the piece looks as though it had been sandblasted. Deburring may  not necessary after a piece has been machined by an abrasive jet.

· No heat is required.  As a result, parts  do not experience structural changes from overheating.   There are no toxic wastes given off by abrasive waterjets and no cooling oils are necessary in the process of machining.

The abrasive jet is controlled by a computer and software enhancements of recent years have made it possible for less experienced operators to machine parts using the machine. The use of this machine is now much more common.

What is cutting kerf?

Kerf = Width

Kerf is defined as the width of material that is removed by a cutting process. It was originally used to describe how much wood was removed by a saw, because the teeth on a saw are bent to the side, so that they remove more material than the width of the saw blade itself, preventing the blade from getting stuck in the wood.

Kerf width is a measure of how much material is removed. When talking about CNC shape cutting with typical cutting processes, kerf is the width of material that the process removes as it cuts through the plate.

Typical Kerf Width for 1/2” thick C.S. (mild steel):

Plasma: 0.150”

Oxy-Fuel: 0.045”

Waterjet: 0.035”

Laser: 0.025”

Important Points

At increased values of waterjet pressure, there is a clear increase of the MRR at higher numbers of passes, meaning that the material removal process becomes more efficient when multiple passes at higher traverse speed are preferred than single machining passes at lower traverse speeds.

For calculation of the cutting efficiency, in the  literature, the concept is defined as the amount of material removed per unit mass of abrasive consumed.

For different abrasive mass flow rate values, the increase of machining passes leads usually to higher cutting efficiency in comparison to the efficiency of the single pass machining case, and the same is observed for increasing jet pressure, especially for the highest value of jet pressure where the efficiency for the case with eight passes is almost 1.5 times higher than that of the single pass case.

The authors conclusion: "it can be deduced that a correct combination of process parameters and number of passes can lead to an increase of cutting efficiency, and it was shown that the use of multiple passes is more effective at higher abrasive mass flow rate and jet pressure values."

So there is scope for productivity engineering to determine the right combination of process parameters for a job, machine and tool combinations.

Military Cost-Benefit Analysis: Theory and practice

Francois Melese, Anke Richter, Binyam Solomon
Routledge, 27-Mar-2015 - Business & Economics - 434 pages

This is the first comprehensive book on Military Cost-Benefit Analysis and provides novel approaches to structuring cost-benefit and affordability analysis amidst an uncertain defense environment and cloudy fiscal prospects. Lifting the veil on military Cost-Benefit Analysis, this volume offers several new practical tools designed to guide defense investments (and divestments), combined with a selection of real-world applications.

The widespread employment of Cost-Benefit Analysis offers a unique opportunity to transform legacy defense forces into efficient, effective, and accountable 21st century organizations. A synthesis of economics, statistics and decision theory, CBA is currently used in a wide range of defense applications in countries around the world: i) to shape national security strategy, ii) to set acquisition policy, and iii) to inform critical investments in people, equipment, infrastructure, services and supplies. As sovereign debt challenges squeeze national budgets, and emerging threats disrupt traditional notions of security, this volume offers valuable tools to navigate the political landscape, meet calls for fiscal accountability, and boost the effectiveness of defense investments to help guarantee future peace and stability.

A valuable resource for scholars, practitioners, novices and experts, this book offers a comprehensive overview of Military Cost-Benefit Analysis and will appeal to anyone interested or involved in improving national security, and will also be of general interest to those responsible for major government programs, projects or policies.
