Introduction
                    
 The paper is intended to highlight the undervalued industrial engineering contribution of the Gilbreths to the Toyota Production System. Typical of all innovative engineering projects, TPS brings together, sifts, and successfully adapts ideas from many sources. Critically, TPS is manifestly a system, in which case the totality is (much) greater than the sum of the constituent parts. Furthermore effective linking of the latter is critical in enabling improved throughput. The viewpoint here is that the Toyota Production System is an evolutionary output with some of its roots clearly traceable back to method study combining multiple flows together with more informed design principles and control strategies. The quality movement helped to enable what was ordered to actually become useful goods (as distinct from making scrap). There are three traceable pathways connecting method study and TPS, which were pursued in paper. These include the Japanese Management Association activities; the lecture activities of Lillian Gilbreth and her associates; and  the Scientific Management Movement and FW Taylor.

              Other related topics include the contributions of the quality movement, JIT designers, and the industrial engineering viewpoint of Shigeo Shingo (1989). The cultural implications of successful TPS implementation compared to earlier industrial relations problems are also exemplified in the paper. An important adjunct is the positing of “contemporary” industrial engineering.

However, the  author is apparently still anchored in the “traditional” IE more reminiscent of the inter-war years. Simple vision for TPS – the achievement of continuous material flows. We also examine the “systems” context of TPS operation which ensures the whole is greater than the sum of the constituent parts.

 Continuous material flow

                Crystal Hall project in UK has many features of TPS. Important contributions to the future of logistics and mass production were undoubtedly made in the execution of this massive project. The real innovation was in the process of producing the components, delivering them to the site, and putting them together. Wilkinson (2000) thus comments:

                The exhibition hall was not built. It was assembled. The various parts (including cast-iron columns, wrought iron beams, wooden components, and glass were made all over the UK and delivered directly to the exhibition site by train. They arrived more or less ready for use, and at the right time and were taken straight to the place where they were needed.  From the supermarket we got the idea of viewing the earlier process in a production line as a kind of store. The later process (customer) goes to the earlier process (supermarket) to acquire the needed parts (commodities) at the time and in the quantity needed. The earlier process immediately produces the quantity just taken (re-stocking the shelves). To achieve this in Toyota, Ohno had to make many major changes to production operations. Because the supermarket logistics were designed to replenish only what had just been taken in a timely manner, lot sizes had to be drastically reduced. Hence, the Single-Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) initiatives (Shingo, 1989). To achieve the efficiencies needed, Ohno and his Toyota colleagues engineered many creative ways to reduce such changeovers. 

            

Holistic view of TPS

        In their seminal paper, Spear and Bowen (1999) argue that to unravel the DNA of TPS the key factor to understand is that the (surprisingly) rigid specification is the very thing that makes the flexibility and creativity possible. That conclusion was reached by Spear and Bowen (1999) based on an extensive four-year study of the Toyota Production System. They examined the inner workings of more than 40 plants in the USA, Europe, and Japan, some successfully operating the system, but some were not. These authors studied artifacts produced in both continuous process  and discrete manufacturing companies. Products ranged from prefabricated housing, auto parts and final auto assembly, cell phones, and computer printers through to injection-moulded plastics and aluminium extrusions. They studied not only routine production work but also service functions such as equipment maintenance, workers’ training and supervision, logistics and materials handling, and process design and redesign.

 The Gilbreth's “four step” approach

(1) To define the current situation noting anything that could have any possible effect on the job and its performance.
(2) To analyse the job using the special equipment he had either invented or adapted for use for this purpose and supported by one of the several systems of analysis that he had also developed.
(3) To examine the results of these analyses, cutting out any part of the job he found unnecessary, combining different parts where possible and, if practicable, designing equipment that would reduce still further the motions to do the job.
(4) Taking what was left of the job to synthesise this into a new job method which was, to him, the best way the job could be done in the given situation.

**Knol is certainly a broad platform in which the knowledge sharing has become easy.

First of all I would like to thanks Dr.K.V.S.S. Rao for giving us the opportunity to write summary on the various topic related to Industrial Engineering and publish on his profile. I would like to say some advantages of Knol.....
According to me Knol is platform where multiple of articles on the same topic is available. Its not like other web side where you can find only single article on a topic, this is one of the big advantages.

And the second advantage is that the authors have an option to allow their articles to be edited by the public, to make them editable only to co-authors or to make them closed entirely.

And last but not the list I would like to say that through Knol the student of PGDIE, NITIE got the opportunity to publish there summary on article on world wide.

My opinion on 'Using knol for student assignments'

Using knol for student assignments is a radical approach which brings value addition to both students and professors.

Advantages for students:
1. The idea of sharing information and knowledge (assignment detail) brings the best out of student as he is aware that everyone can see/review his work.
2. By seeing others' work, one can be aware about what is expected out of him.
3. It acts as a repository for 'n' number of views, opinions and perceptions regarding a particular topic.
4. As it is open to everyone, it improves healthy competition.

Advantages for professors:
1. Professors can check assignments at any point of time from any place as information is available in web.
2. Cost effective as no need to maintain in server or some private site.
3. Easy reference in future to check the details of the past.

Disadvantages:
1. Students may tend to copy the solution of others and present in their own way rather than working it upon their own.
2. If we keep on using this; at some point, we may get lost in the vast information available over here on a particular topic.
3. Even though there can be 'n' solutions (not necessarily correct), referring the right solution in future may be difficult and it may give wrong notion to those who check the incorrect solution

Anyway, there is no perfect solution with zero disadvantages and we need to keep on improving and at this juncture, using knol for student assignments is a well sought and good idea that needs to be implemented by all.

Feedback for Knol as Student Activities Platform

No one is born genius, no one is perfect as well. One can increase his/her level of knowledge by reading articles and sharing them to others. Knol is the perfect platform for sharing knowledge with each other. A knowledge holder can write on any topic whether it be science, engineering, management or humanities like history, sociology, psychology etc.
Some of the advantages of knol:
1. One can get large number of articles related to a topic and thus he/she can gain immense knowledge about that topic
2. Provide an excellent platform for expressing one's views
3. Improves one's thinking ability and also breeds innovation

KNOL, in true spirit symbolizes the spirit of Knowledge Sharing Database. People share their views, thought, experience thorugh KNOL. There are several advantages associated with the KNOL. Some of them are listed below:
1. It is a centralise database which has let people to share their thoughts. It has merged the human boundaries to a great extent.
2. It has benefitted the student community. Students filter the idea shared on KNOL, by Academicians, to enhance their understanding about a particular subject.
3. KNOL services are open source. No need to purchase a license or pay to avail its service.

Knol, as the punch line says, is a small unit of knowledge, and students are contributing there small unit of knowledge to make it big ocean. And the kind of initiative taken by Prof Rao to explore various aspect of Industrial Engineering is adorable. As an activity platform for student, knol helps us in various manner like:

1. A common platform to share our knowledge and experience
2. Learning from the experience of Industrial Engineers all over the world
3. Writing Knols is making student more expressive
4. Links people, having same area of interest
5. Spreading the activities of PGDIE, NITIE in whole web space

Feedback for knol's promotion as student activities platform

It was the first time I came to know about knol when we interacted with Dr.K.V.S.S. Rao at NITIE. We got some assignments and we needed to publish it on knol. The biggest advantage which we got was a platform where you can share your knowledge all over the world. To write a knol improved writing skills exponentially as we had to write something that whole world would review. Another aspect is the comments which we get here are quite useful to rectify and update the knowledge. Many times we might come to know about something new which existed since long and we did not know. Some questions do have obvious solutions for which we might we wondering round and round. I hope that there will be greater number of articles coming up in future on knol which shall be of significant value to the people all over the globe.

Advantages:
1.Knol provides a platform of sharing and dicussing the information about a particular topic or theme
2.Provides a healthy environment to learn more content
3.Stimulates an individual to project his ideas which can be shared and reviewed by others

Disadvantages:
1.Segregation regarding copy protected articles is required

Feedback about knol's promotion as student activities platform

I m writing down some of the advantages knol provides to student.
1) Integration of distributed student communities not in India across the world.
2) Promote not to reinvent the wheel, instead use what existing, and build over it.
3) Its also helps student to develop the habit of writing. Big plus point as written communication is one of the most sort tool in industry.
4) Synchronization of thoughts, presentation skills and also improves creative writing.

Its also have some disadvantages
- Which author's knol is more relevant for topic. page view and other statistical data does not give us this information.

KNOL...If you have knowledge, let others light their candles at it.

According to my opinion Knol is an acronym for Knowledge and "Knowledge is power"
"Knowledge is the only thing that increases on sharing."

Knol provides a very good platform for sharing Ideas Globally. Prof KVSSN Rao initiated me to write on Knol and I m thankful to him for the same.

What is Timber Harvesting?

The process of timber harvesting industry can be divided into the following subprocesses.

Felling: consists of cutting, limbing and topping a tree.

Bucking: Converts a tree-length log to sawlog or pulpwood segments of specific lengths.

Prebunching: It is an optional activity. Transports logs from the stump to a skidroad to await skidding.

Skidding: Involves transportation of a log from the skidroad or stump to the landing.

Loading: Transfers the log from a log pile to a truck or trailer.

Hauling: Transports the log from the landing to a processing point.

Of the six operations, felling and bucking make up the production functions of logging, and the other four can be considered material handling operations.

IEs  can do process studies, operation studies and motion studies in the overall process and subprocesses.

Videotapes Expand IE Ability

The installation of videotape system at Pullman Trailmobile reduced IE man-time required to set standards by 30%. Sony b&w Betamax system, Sony SLO-340 with a rechargeable battery-operated system was used in the company. The three plants and the corporate office have separate systems to record as well as to view the tapes. The approximate cost of each system was $3000. The recording provides the complete backup data for the standard and the management and line employees’ acceptance levels of standards went to higher percentages. The videos tapes were used for methods improvements also. Training of staff and line workers was a natural side benefit.  New workers can see the method on the video and hence use right methods from the very beginning. Rerun of models that have not been run for some time is done more efficiently now as memories are instantly jogged by watching the videotape and the time spent on covering the ground is minimized. Videotapes also facilitate communication of practices from plant to plant. The authors concluded the article with the statement that at Pullman Trailmobile, it was proved that a picture was truly worth a thousand words.

IEs in Utility Company Prove Their Value

The Florida Power & Light Co. is a privately owned electric utility that operates as a regulated monopoly.  A management services department ws created in 1972.  This department provides full range IE function. Traditional IE techniques were utilized in setting measured day work standards and establishing staffing levels. The department is organized into five functional areas and industrial engineeris account 32% of professionals in the department.
 
As a part of the systems development screening function, a total of 19 projects proposals to improve efficiency amounting to $25 million were submitted to the committee.

Standards for Radiology Are Made Easier

8 selected procedures were measured in a radiology department and then combining technician time with support time, an average variable time standard is established for each of 300 procedures of radioloyg department  at LDS Hospital, Salt Lake City UT.
 
A delay allowance of 20% was used in setting standard times. The high delay was used to allow for a wide variation in the condition of patients, waiting for radiologists, retakes and unexpected equipment downtime.
