Product industrial engineering and process industrial engineering are continuous improvement activities based on periodic IE studies or engineering developments that become known or ideas communicated by various employees in the organization including persons working in the IE department.

Consultation  with manufacturers, sellers and consultants in the relevant areas helps to find solutions to productivity improvement opportunities or problems. L.D. Miles in value engineering methodology specifically highlights this practice. In method studies, work studies and operation studies that are part of process industrial engineering, same practice is to be followed by industrial engineers.

Case of Dynamic Control of Circulatory Pumps for Heating Systems.  Savings 20% of Energy Cost.

KSB SE & Co. KGaA, based in Frankenthal, has developed  Dynamic Control, for its circulator pumps of the Calio S and Calio type series.  Dynamic Control cuts power by up to 20% compared to consumption of  conventionally controlled pump sets.

Modern circulators change their speed to match current demand and  move  the operating point along a programmed control curve. There is a  minimum system curve. But as the minimum system curve is usually unknown, plant designers specify a  control curve that is clearly above the minimum system curve. This uses more power than necessary.

Dynamic Control has the ability to move the operating point down and develop  the minimum system curve.  The control system automatically gathers all required information from its internal signals. The installer no longer needs to make time-consuming specfic settings since the pump is able to determine the system curve itself. There is benefit from lower energy costs, low carbon foot print and less noise.

The new function is already integrated in the current Calio and Calio S type series and can be installed in older pumps.

Industrial engineers have to be on the lookout for various technological developments that reduce costs in their operations and processes.

"ECONO-PILOT" Energy-Saving System For Water Pumps
Published Date: 2003
SAWAI Tsuneji,  TAKAHASHI Hiroshi,  INOUE Ken-Ichi

We have developed the "Econo-Pilot" energy-saving system for water pumps, which reduces the power consumption of motors for water supply. In the energy-saving control field, the conventional method used is that of constant pressure control of the water supply with inverters. However, as Econo-Pilot employs a method of variable water pressure control corresponding to flow volume, the system can raise the energy-saving ratio up to 90 percent.

This paper describes the principles of the system and its basic functions, along with a case study of some practical applications.

  1. I suggest when you go for an interview of a company, try to collect recent technical developments related to the processes of the company. Then you can inform them about possible industrial engineering modification you will evaluate. Remember process chart operations - Material processing - inspection - transport - warehousing - delays. Try to read about recent engineering developments in each operation. Similarly about productivity management in each operation.

  2. Excellent information provided by you through this post. I followed all the mentioned information. You wrote really very well, I appreciate your work. Peristaltic, tube or hose pump is a type of positive displacement pump that transports the liquid through the tube by a series of rollers that squeeze it against the pump housing.
