In a discrete manufacturing system, the final product is an assembly of distinct parts which are fastened or welded or joined by other methods to form an assembled product.
The sequence of steps followed to make each part from the raw material is a process. Then there are sub-assembly and final assembly process. So in a discrete manufacturing system, each final product has parts making processes, sub-assembly processes and final assembly process. So we can say a discrete manufacturing system has many assembly processes and part making processes when there are multiple products.
Each process needs industrial engineering.
The industrial engineering task starts with the making process chart. In a process chart, five types operations are shown as there are performed to complete the manufacture of a product. The five types of operations are material processing, inspection, material handling or transfer, storage and planning problem-delay (temporary storage). A process may contain multiple material processing operations, multiple inspections, multiple material transfers and multiple delays. Storage will be at the starting (raw material storage) and final part storage at the end. After the preliminary process chart is made, data related to each operation has to be collection in an operation information sheet. From the operation information sheet some data is transferred to the process chart.
Then the process chart is first analyzed using ECDRS approach. ECDRS is eliminate, combine, divide, rearrange or simplify approach. If two operations are combined it is a new and different operation. If an operation is divided, two new operations come into existence. Eliminate decision means the operation is completely removed from the process. In the simplify alternative the operation has to be modified. ECDRS decisions are recorded on a process analysis sheet.
In the case of combine, divide and simplify decisions, the operation information sheet needs to be used to develop a new method or operation. The operation needs to be analyzed to find alternatives to improve the operation and increase productivity.
