H.B. Maynard - Operation Analysis - Machine Work Study - Operator Work Study
Nine Points of Primary Analysis in Operation Analysis of a Process (Revised Steps - 16.3.2026).
1. Purpose of operation.
2. Complete survey of all operations performed on part.
3. Inspection requirements.
4. Material.
5. Material handling.
6. Equipment, accessories, tools and setup and tool - Storage facility.
7. Common possibilities for job improvement.
8. Working conditions.
9. Method.
a. Sequence change - Divide further, Combine, Rearrange, Simplify
b. Work place arrangement
c. Machine motions - machine work improvement
d. Operator movements and motions - motion study
First analyze and improve material, machines, tools (inputs) - Then Machine effort related aspects and last human effort related aspect.

Purpose of Nine Points of Primary Analysis in Operation Analysis of a Process (Revised Steps - 16.3.2026).
1. Purpose of operation. - Is the purpose relevant? Is the operation effective in fulfilling the purpose? Is it to be eliminated as it is not required now?
2. Complete survey of all operations performed on part. - The analyst must always have in his mind all operations of the process so that sequence decisions can be made at the right moment.
3. Inspection requirements. - What is the inspection specification?
4. Material. - Input material - Is it in right shape for making the operation effective and efficient? Batch quantity decision can also be examined at this stage.
5. Material handling. - How is the material coming to this work station from the earlier location stores or work center.
6. Equipment, accessories, tools and setup and tool - Storage facility. - For each operation, processing, inspection, material handling or storage the equipment and accessories used have to be analyzed,
7. Common possibilities for job improvement. - /this is a common list
8. Working conditions. - The working conditions around the work station are analyzed from the point of view of quality and worker comfort.
9. Method.
a. Sequence change - Divide further, Combine, Rearrange, Simplify
b. Work place arrangement - The placement of materials, inspection tools and other production tools.
c. Machine motions - machine work improvement - the movement of the machine elements, tools and material are examined from the point of quality and time.
d. Operator movements and motions - motion study - Operators movements are examined. Motions are examined.
This analysis is done for processing operations, inspection operations, storage operations and material movement operations.
