Labor Productivity Improvement  Industrial Engineering

Labor productivity has major economic implications.  When a society produces  more goods - food, clothing, medicine, and transportation, from the efforts of the same labor force or population, people will be better off on average and standard of living improves.  Hence labor productivity improvement is a strategic initiatives at all levels of economic activity in all countries.

Adam Smith, in a chapter called the "Division of Labor",  described the 18 separate assembly steps in making a single metal pin. He estimated that a single person, working alone, could make 20 pins in a day. But,  10 people on an assembly line could make 48,000 pins in a single day - an output of 4,800 pins per worker per day. That's quite an improvement in labor productivity due to division of labor. This is an example of nontechnical labor productivity improvement.

An Oregon, Portland inventor Henry Phillips in 1936 patented a new type of screw head that was specifically designed to allow assembly line autoworkers to more quickly and easily seat the screwdriver into the screw. By 1940, the Phillips head screw was the standard in the automotive industry. This screw saved many hours of labor and improved labor productivity. This is an example of  labor productivity improvement due to technical invention.

Machine Effort Effort Industrial Engineering - Design of Machine Effort for Overall Process and Equipment Effectiveness and Efficiency

Industrial Engineering is System Efficiency Engineering.  Its main areas are   Machine Effort Industrial Engineering  and Human Effort Industrial Engineering. Narayana Rao K.V.S.S.,  Industrial Engineering Knowledge Center.

Machine Effort Effort Industrial Engineering  - Design of Machine Effort for Overall Process and Equipment Effectiveness and Efficiency

In each of the operations shown in the flow process chart, namely, processing, inspection, transport, temporary storage (due to delay in next operation) and permanent storage, there is involvement of machines and men. There are machine effort and human effort. Industrial engineering is primarily focused on machine effort as engineers' activity and additionally developed science and engineering of human effort. That way, industrial engineering also studies integration issues between machines and men apart from the study of machines and related engineering. So there are process machine effort industrial engineering and process human effort industrial engineering as main components of process industrial engineering.

To do machine effort industrial engineering, industrial engineers need to have full knowledge of the machine elements, various operations that can be done on the machine and the process plan of the job. Then only they can look for more productive alternatives from new engineering development, new machine accessories that are being offered by vendors and from their internal learning and creative breakthroughs.

Machine Effort Industrial Engineering Component of IE curriculum must have the following areas.

1. Productivity Science of Machine Effort

2. Industrial Engineering of Machine Designs.

3. Industrial Engineering of Facilities Layout and Work Station Design

4. Industrial Engineering of Machine Operation.

5. Industrial Engineering of Material Handling, Storage and Transport.

6. Industrial Engineering of Machine Maintenance.

What is machine effort industrial engineering? according to narayana rao

According to K.V.S.S. Narayana Rao, a prominent industrial engineering scholar, Machine Effort Industrial Engineering is a key component of industrial engineering that focuses on improving the efficiency and productivity of machines within engineering systems. Narayana Rao defines industrial engineering as "System Efficiency Engineering," encompassing both Machine Effort Industrial Engineering and Human Effort Industrial Engineering. These two aspects work together to optimize the performance of man-machine systems, ensuring maximum productivity while minimizing costs and resource use.

Core Concept of Machine Effort Industrial Engineering

Machine Effort Industrial Engineering involves the systematic study, analysis, and redesign of machines, their operations, and associated processes to enhance their productivity. It emphasizes engineering interventions that reduce the time, cost, and resources required for machine-based tasks while maintaining or improving output quality. This includes optimizing machine design, tools, accessories, and operational methods based on data such as cost, time, and performance metrics.

Narayana Rao highlights that this concept traces back to the work of F.W. Taylor, whom he credits as the father of industrial engineering. Taylor’s early efforts, such as his studies on belt drives and machine shop productivity, demonstrated how machine-related improvements could significantly boost efficiency. Rao builds on this foundation, arguing that industrial engineering must address the machine component of production systems as a distinct focus area, separate yet complementary to human effort engineering.

Key Features

1. Machine Work Study: Rao advocates for "Machine Work Study" as a specific technique within industrial engineering. This involves analyzing the machine's role in a process—its speed, downtime, setup time, and operational cost—and redesigning it to minimize the machine cost component of production. For example, reducing machining time through better tools or methods directly lowers costs and increases output.

2. Productivity Improvement: The goal is to maximize the productivity of machines by ensuring they operate at optimal speeds, with minimal waste and downtime. Rao points to historical examples like Taylor’s slide rules for determining optimal cutting speeds and feeds, which improved machine performance in early industrial settings.

3. Cost Reduction: A central tenet of Rao’s framework is that machine effort engineering should leverage cost data to drive redesign decisions. This aligns with industrial engineering’s origins in cost-efficient engineering, where machines are reconfigured to deliver the same or better results at a lower expense.

4. Integration with System Efficiency: Machines are part of broader engineering systems, and their efficiency impacts the overall system. Rao emphasizes that machine effort engineering must consider interactions with human operators, materials, and other resources to achieve holistic improvements.

Historical Context and Evolution

Rao notes that while Taylor’s initial work included machine-focused improvements, the field of industrial engineering later shifted heavily toward human effort studies (e.g., motion and time study). He argues that this created a gap in attention to machines, which he seeks to address by reintroducing "Machine Effort Industrial Engineering" as a vital discipline. He cites examples like Toyota’s Jidoka pillar—focused on better automation and machine design—as evidence of ongoing relevance, suggesting that companies like Toyota continue to practice machine effort engineering under modern frameworks.

Practical Application
In practice, Machine Effort Industrial Engineering involves:

  • Analyzing machine performance data (e.g., cycle time, energy use, maintenance costs).
  • Redesigning machine elements, such as cutting tools or fixtures, to improve efficiency.
  • Implementing automation or mechanization where it enhances productivity without compromising quality.
  • Ensuring machines support operator comfort and system goals, avoiding over-optimization that harms the human component.

Rao’s Contribution

Narayana Rao formalized this concept in his writings and presentations, notably in his "Taylor - Narayana Rao Principles of Industrial Engineering" presented at the 2017 IISE Annual Conference. He positions Machine Effort Industrial Engineering as a rediscovery and expansion of Taylor’s original machine-focused productivity efforts, adapted to modern contexts with advanced technologies like Industry 4.0, AI, and digital twins.

In summary, according to Narayana Rao, Machine Effort Industrial Engineering is the branch of industrial engineering dedicated to optimizing machine performance through engineering redesign, with a focus on productivity, cost reduction, and system efficiency. It complements human effort engineering to create balanced, high-performing industrial systems.

The benefits we get is the exposure we are getting in the Industrial
Engineering world.
Every idea posted in knol is judged and valuable feedbacks are given
instead of criticism.
Even if someone criticises anything, it is always constructive criticism.
The idea is to know the Industrial Engineering world, to be abreast
with the recent developments
in the IE area. Also it is a platform where Industrial Engineers from
different countries share their ideas
and learnings and as such it is possible for an individual to know
more about implementation of IE
in diverse fields.

Sometimes it happens that an individual posts an article in KNOL;
let's say about some process of IE.It often happens that he gets response from
people from industries who are working in that field. This helps the
individual to gain practical knowledge on top of his sound theoritical knowledge.

It's Knol......open the mind, remove the boundries

First of all my word of thanks to KVSS N Rao sir and NITIE as a whole for giving all of us new dimensions every day and off-course Knol is one of them.

Encouragement to knol is an appreciable idea as...
1.It will give platform to many hidden talents of the nation,
2.It will brand NITIE as an entity where open expression of ideas and thoughts is encouraged which is
really a need of the day
3. Knol removes all the existing discrepancies or boundaries which may hinder open express of ideas
4.It gives you all ,an international platform for puting your thoughts
5 It's a great source of knowledge, although the content is vast but it's you who decide what to read

Conrcens..
As some of my friends have raised the issue of copyrights but i think idea is worthwhile if it's expressed and Knol is the place where anyone can express any idea or thought whether it's one who generated idea or someone else ........

knol as...........new knowledge library

I am thankful to DR. Narayana Rao K V S S to giving a opportunity to express our views.

After meet knol (knowledge library) i think as.......
"There must be a revolution in thinking. And it is towards this that the COLLECTIONs of the New Knowledge Library(knol) are major contributors, for they speak of the Future. They speak of Destiny. In this they are prophetic."
Knol is the publishing imprint of The Society for The Greater Community Way of Knowledge, non-profit organization dedicated to teaching Greater Community.
It depends on contributions from writers & readers to sustain it in its missio.

Knowledge is power :"knol" - A boon for students

I express my gratitude to Dr. Narayana Rao K V S S for allowing us to present our views regarding knol promotion as a student activities platform.

**Knol is certainly a broad platform in which the knowledge sharing has become easy.
**It also features "comment block" which is a kind of discussion forum where there can be the confluence of many ideas ,opinions and contentions as well through which the sundry ideas will lead to right knowledge

There is an adage as "one who is a repository of knowledge is worthy of respect at all times"

A qoute from history:-
Knowledge was sought not with a view to merely making money, but it was sought for its own sake. When we seek knowledge, it must not only to have material prosperity, but we must seek knowledge for knowledge's sake.
One who values knowledge for its own sake, stands to benefit in the long run. Instant results are not lasting. If even kings had to bow before those with knowledge, it becomes evident that nothing can equal knowledge, not even power.

Feedback on Knol as Student Activities Platform

First of all I would like to thanks Dr.K.V.S.S. Rao for giving us the opportunity to write summary on the various topic related to Industrial Engineering and publish on his profile. I would like to say some advantages of Knol.....
According to me Knol is platform where multiple of articles on the same topic is available. Its not like other web side where you can find only single article on a topic, this is one of the big advantages.

And the second advantage is that the authors have an option to allow their articles to be edited by the public, to make them editable only to co-authors or to make them closed entirely.

And last but not the list I would like to say that through Knol the student of PGDIE, NITIE got the opportunity to publish there summary on article on world wide.

My opinion on 'Using knol for student assignments'

Using knol for student assignments is a radical approach which brings value addition to both students and professors.

Advantages for students:
1. The idea of sharing information and knowledge (assignment detail) brings the best out of student as he is aware that everyone can see/review his work.
2. By seeing others' work, one can be aware about what is expected out of him.
3. It acts as a repository for 'n' number of views, opinions and perceptions regarding a particular topic.
4. As it is open to everyone, it improves healthy competition.

Advantages for professors:
1. Professors can check assignments at any point of time from any place as information is available in web.
2. Cost effective as no need to maintain in server or some private site.
3. Easy reference in future to check the details of the past.

Disadvantages:
1. Students may tend to copy the solution of others and present in their own way rather than working it upon their own.
2. If we keep on using this; at some point, we may get lost in the vast information available over here on a particular topic.
3. Even though there can be 'n' solutions (not necessarily correct), referring the right solution in future may be difficult and it may give wrong notion to those who check the incorrect solution

Anyway, there is no perfect solution with zero disadvantages and we need to keep on improving and at this juncture, using knol for student assignments is a well sought and good idea that needs to be implemented by all.

Feedback for Knol as Student Activities Platform

No one is born genius, no one is perfect as well. One can increase his/her level of knowledge by reading articles and sharing them to others. Knol is the perfect platform for sharing knowledge with each other. A knowledge holder can write on any topic whether it be science, engineering, management or humanities like history, sociology, psychology etc.
Some of the advantages of knol:
1. One can get large number of articles related to a topic and thus he/she can gain immense knowledge about that topic
2. Provide an excellent platform for expressing one's views
3. Improves one's thinking ability and also breeds innovation
4. Most importantly it not only improves one's knowledge but attitude and skill also because, in knol, along with article sharing, one can share videos related to that article.

Feedback for Knol promotion as Student Activities Platform

KNOL, in true spirit symbolizes the spirit of Knowledge Sharing Database. People share their views, thought, experience thorugh KNOL. There are several advantages associated with the KNOL. Some of them are listed below:
1. It is a centralise database which has let people to share their thoughts. It has merged the human boundaries to a great extent.
2. It has benefitted the student community. Students filter the idea shared on KNOL, by Academicians, to enhance their understanding about a particular subject.
3. KNOL services are open source. No need to purchase a license or pay to avail its service.

At NITIE, Mumbai, similar initiative has been taken by Prof. KVSSN Rao. He shares his views, lectures notes, assignments on KNOL. KNOL has provided a platform and people like Prof. Rao are using it for a noble cause.

Feedback for Knol as Student Activities Platform

I would like to describe Knol in the following manner

K : Knowledge
N : Notice
O : Open
L : Learn

K for knowledge : Through Knol we can gain as much knowledge as we can. Everyone in this world is having his/her different views and perceptions towards any thing or idea, so if we are able to know at least a few of them it helps us in gaining much knowledge.

N for notice : We are well informed of the new happenings and new experiments carried out in this field.

O for open : Writing knol is open for all. Anyone can express his views. Knol provides us a platform to be more expressive and interactive.

L for learn : Last but not the least is "L". It gives us an opportunity for endless learning as everyday there is a new thing to learn from the various posts.

I thank Rao Sir who introduced Knol to us and made us aware of such a knowledgeable site.

Feedback for Knol's as student activities platform

I am highly obliged to Prof Rao for introducing Knol to our batch. Knol, as the punch line says, is a small unit of knowledge, and students are contributing there small unit of knowledge to make it big ocean. And the kind of initiative taken by Prof Rao to explore various aspect of Industrial Engineering is adorable. As an activity platform for student, knol helps us in various manner like:

1. A common platform to share our knowledge and experience
2. Learning from the experience of Industrial Engineers all over the world
3. Writing Knols is making student more expressive
4. Links people, having same area of interest
5. Spreading the activities of PGDIE, NITIE in whole web space

Thses are some of the things just coming to my mind. I hope all of us can contribute more and more articles in coming future, to enhance our knowledge level.

Feedback for knol's promotion as student activities platform

It was the first time I came to know about knol when we interacted with Dr.K.V.S.S. Rao at NITIE. We got some assignments and we needed to publish it on knol. The biggest advantage which we got was a platform where you can share your knowledge all over the world. To write a knol improved writing skills exponentially as we had to write something that whole world would review. Another aspect is the comments which we get here are quite useful to rectify and update the knowledge. Many times we might come to know about something new which existed since long and we did not know. Some questions do have obvious solutions for which we might we wondering round and round. I hope that there will be greater number of articles coming up in future on knol which shall be of significant value to the people all over the globe.

Feedback about Knol's promotion

Advantages:
1.Knol provides a platform of sharing and dicussing the information about a particular topic or theme
2.Provides a healthy environment to learn more content
3.Stimulates an individual to project his ideas which can be shared and reviewed by others

Disadvantages:
1.Segregation regarding copy protected articles is required

Feedback about knol's promotion as student activities platform

I m writing down some of the advantages knol provides to student.
1) Integration of distributed student communities not in India across the world.
2) Promote not to reinvent the wheel, instead use what existing, and build over it.
3) Its also helps student to develop the habit of writing. Big plus point as written communication is one of the most sort tool in industry.
4) Synchronization of thoughts, presentation skills and also improves creative writing.

Its also have some disadvantages
- Which author's knol is more relevant for topic. page view and other statistical data does not give us this information.

KNOL...If you have knowledge, let others light their candles at it.

According to my opinion Knol is an acronym for Knowledge and "Knowledge is power"
"Knowledge is the only thing that increases on sharing."

Knol provides a very good platform for sharing Ideas Globally. Prof KVSSN Rao initiated me to write on Knol and I m thankful to him for the same.

Posting Articles, Summaries, Assignments on Knol increases the visibility of the Thought, Idea or Concept covered in those articles. People from all around the world can appreciate, comment or suggest some improvements so as to develop that thought towards perfection. To make a better world.
We read...We learn....We write.....We grow....
