F.W. Taylor advocated study of each element of a work task. In production operations, both machine and man are involved. Each element related to machine and environment and each element related to man are to be improved. The improvement can take place at any time. Periodically, the current operation/process are documented and the elements are investigated over period of time and improvements are implemented. It is desirable that many elements are improved as early as possible in one instances. But that idea does not stop improvements in the future as and when new improvements become feasible.
Taylor's idea is now being used under a new concept "The Aggregation of Marginal Gains."
