Product Value High - Organization Lean - Value Lean Thinking

Lean thinking principles given by Womack and Jones - Value, Value Stream, Flow, Pull and Perfection.

The explained, "Lean thinking. It provides a- way to specify value, line up value-creating actions in the best sequence, conduct these activities without interruption whenever someone requests them, and perform them more and more effectively."

The main emphasis in the lean thinking theory of Womack and Jones is flow. The focus is zero inventory production as the ideal. It is an explanation of the innovation made by Toyota people in production systems. Toyota achieved remarkable productivity increase through their emphasis on JIT and Jidoka. JIT is zero inventory production as an idea and JIDOKA is zero manpower production as an ideal.

Lean thinking Womack and Jones mainly develops theory for JIT production or flow production and adds other elements sparingly.

Lean thinking was augmented by many subsequent consultants with various additional activities but a good theory is lacking.

A theory built around high value product produced in a lean organization at the lowest cost would cover many more aspects of the production systems to provide guidance to production system designers, improvers and managers.

What is a Lean Organization?

What is meant by  keeping the organization lean?

An organization includes all resources being used including human resources. Keeping resources lean means at the design stage or planning stage, productivity design is done and every resource is being used at its maximum productivity.

Industrial Engineering - Productivity Improvement - Process Improvement - Product Redesign - Continuous Improvement

Industrial engineering is improvement in various elements of engineering operations to increase productivity. Along with engineering elements, industrial engineers evaluate and improve many other elements also as they are responsible for productivity and cost of items produced in a process. Through assignments of improving productivity and efficiency of information technology and software engineering processes, industrial engineers specializing in IT were given responsibility for business processes also. Thus industrial engineers with focus on various branches of engineering provide their services to companies and society to improve various elements of the products and processes on a continuous basis over the product life cycle. They are active in engineering or production-maintenance-service-logistic processes and business processes.

Productivity improvement always focuses on quality and flexibility issues as productivity improvement should not lead to any deterioration in quality or flexibility. Delivery and cost are always at the core of industrial engineering. Thus when QFCD paradigm came, that is attention to quality, flexibility, cost and delivery became prominent, many industrial engineers were given the responsibility of managing this function of continuous improvement.

Jidoka with Smart Machines - Intelligent Machines - Artificial Intelligence

Jidoka - A Reinterpretation by Michael Balle

Sakichi Toyoda was looking at human difficulties in producing cotton when he sought to reduce both defects (challenges in human use) and hardships (difficulties in doing the work). He famously came up with his key jidoka mechanism  of thin metal strips that would test the tension of the cotton thread and stop the machine if the thread broke. He was solving human problems with automatic devices. His goal was to perfect ever better looms. Later on,  Kiichiro Toyoda took as his goal would as perfecting ever better automobiles.

Our society is built on engineering,  creating lifestyle-changing mechanical appliances that can replace human labor in activities ranging from transportation (trains) to textile manufacturing (sewing machines, spinning equipment) and agriculture (the tractor). The point of such products is to make you autonomous – you no longer need to do the work yourself directly or ask someone else to do it for you. Think of those espresso machines now ubiquitous in offices around the world: whereas before you had to go to a coffee shop to get an expresso, with these machines and capsules you can have the coffee at the touch of button,  without any help. The same goes for washing machines, dishwashers,  etc.

https://www.planet-lean.com/articles/lean-without-jidoka-is-just-fordism

Jidoka provides more support of machines to humans. It also reduces the human effort involved in supervising the machine. The machine stops when there is a problem and calls for human assistance. Increasing the jidoka of a process means, increase in machine effort and reduction of human effort. Smart machines help in increasing jidoka of a process. Smart machine design has to focus on this aspect also.

"We'll start with a focus on driving $3 billion of cost reduction in 2023, one-third in cost of sales and two-thirds in operating expenses," said the company.

In addition, we have also identified structural cost reductions and efficiency drivers. In aggregate, our efforts should drive  $8 billion to $10 billion by the end of 2025.

Intel is making a small accounting change that will have a big impact on the bottom line.

Effective Jan. 23, Intel has increased the estimated useful life of some production machinery and equipment from five years to eight years.

When you're a company like Intel, which pours many billions of dollars each year into equipment necessary to manufacture semiconductors, a change like this will have an enormous impact on the income statement. Intel expects this accounting change to result in a $4.2 billion reduction in total depreciation expense in 2023. You read that right -- $4.2 billion.

By establishing a stand-alone business group, the manufacturing organization will be able to charge 1.5-3x times the regular price for expedited requests, increasing accountability and reducing the overall number of such requests. Other identified areas for cost savings include reducing test sort times, adjusting ramp rates, optimizing product architecture, and managing sample production. Finally, these initiatives are expected to generate cost savings of $4-$5 billion over time.
