My personal involvement in IE in a significant manner after my PhD in stock markets was initiated by an editorial of Robert N. Lehrer which I read in 1994. Lehrer, Robert N., “The Nature of Industrial Engineering,” The Journal of Industrial Engineering, vol.5, No.1, January 1954, Page 4

According to Professor, Leon McGinnis, Lehrer developed the quantitative side of IE, by hiring some really good young operational research people like Mike Shetty, John Jarvis , and Mo Bazaara. But he was for balance. He recruited and developed the engineering side of IE, like Jim Apple and John White, and the human side of IE, like Alan Porter and Terry Connolly.
