Industrial Engineering - Productivity Improvement - Process Improvement - Product Redesign - Continuous Improvement
Industrial engineering is improvement in various elements of engineering operations to increase productivity. Along with engineering elements, industrial engineers evaluate and improve many other elements also as they are responsible for productivity and cost of items produced in a process. Through assignments of improving productivity and efficiency of information technology and software engineering processes, industrial engineers specializing in IT were given responsibility for business processes also. Thus industrial engineers with focus on various branches of engineering provide their services to companies and society to improve various elements of the products and processes on a continuous basis over the product life cycle. They are active in engineering or production-maintenance-service-logistic processes and business processes.
Productivity improvement always focuses on quality and flexibility issues as productivity improvement should not lead to any deterioration in quality or flexibility. Delivery and cost are always at the core of industrial engineering. Thus when QFCD paradigm came, that is attention to quality, flexibility, cost and delivery became prominent, many industrial engineers were given the responsibility of managing this function of continuous improvement.

Productivity Improvement at GSK Using Industry 4.0 Technologies
The GSK plant has applied advanced technologies throughout its manufacturing operation, using advanced analytics and neural networks. This has improved line speeds at the site by 21%, cut downtime, increased yields, and delivered an OEE (overall Equipment effectiveness) improvement of 10%.
GSK has applied deep-learning image recognition to detect quality defects, and is using artificial intelligence to optimise machine throughput. By implementing digital twin technologies, it has boosted capacity by 13%, while cycle time monitoring and the use of digital visualisation tools have cut cycle times by 9%.

GSK opens Singapore facility to reduce production time
5-Jul-2019
GSK has officially opened the result of its US$96 million investment, new state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities built in Singapore. The plant will improve production times for the pharma giant. The new facilities are located in GSK's Jurong site and include two continuous manufacturing facilities. Further investment in digital manufacturing operations and processes will allow GSK to ensure efficient and high-quality production of medicines.

“If you aren’t doing anything to address productivity issues, then you are falling behind your
competition.”
“GSK ... wants to ensure that we stay competitive with all of our key business processes.”
Jerry Rosenthal, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (LSSBB), Continuous Improvement Consultant
at GSK’s Philadelphia office.
while some companies use the standard seven sources of waste, GSK identifies nine sources. “We consider underutilization of resources as well as failure to reference historical knowledge and experiences as two additional sources of waste."
