Why General Motors Shifted Gears in Its Manufacturing Strategy
Nov 30, 2018
According to Marina Whitman, professor emeritus of business administration and public policy at the University of Michigan and a former vice president with General Motors, GM is making right decisions to close plants whose products do not have adequate demand and releasing cash to invest in newer lines of vehicles now given preference by buyers. Also, overall demand for automobiles is coming down, and companies have to reduce capacity.

GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant— a complex manufacturing assembly facility —employs about 1,800 workers in its 4.1-million-square-foot warehouse.

More than 75 automated vehicles (Seegrid) are now used in the facility. The vehicles move materials throughout the plant, primarily delivering bulk body shop and general-assembly materials.
These self-driving vehicles are  more consistent, predictable,  reliable increasing  efficiency and productivity. Pasquale Forletta, industrial engineering manager at the plant (https://www.linkedin.com/in/pasquale-forletta-5306637/),  oversaw the implementation and deployment of the vehicles.  According to him GM Manufacturing is  focused on waste elimination through continuous improvement and this technology is cost effective in increasing productivity.
