Industrial engineers are productivity engineers. Reducing defects increases productivity. Hence industrial engineers promote and support zero defects campaigns. Zero defect idea encourages investigation of every defect occurrence that suggests certain countermeasures to avoid such a defect in the future.
Industrial engineers study inspection activities as part of process improvement studies. In this task, industrial engineers study many in-process inspection steps. In these studies, they can look into effectiveness of defect prevention measures (poka-yokes) and further inspection during process and subsequent inspections of the finished products and parts. Lack of effectiveness is highlighted by industrial engineers. They put in their effort to find ways to increase quality and also indicate to quality improvement teams. In their productivity engineering activity, IEs try to increase efficiency of inspection activities. They make efforts to reduce the cost of inspection activities.
Industrial engineers can improve inspection tools and gauges in their process improvement studies.
