Industrial Engineering Practice in Top Global Manufacturing Companies - Top 100

New Industrial Engineering Jobs in Top Global Manufacturing Companies

The panel discussion in IISE Annual Conference 2021 on the Contribution of ISE to Companies provides motivation for further developing this series of articles. My article on Coca-Cola already appeared in the IISE magazine "Industrial Management" in March-April 2021 Issue. The editor of magazine personally appreciated it as a good article in the interaction in the conference.

Thanks to A to Z Blogging Challenge Organizing Team and Participating Bloggers. This group activity enabled to do research and develop 26 articles on 26 companies regarding industrial engineering activities in them in 2020.

Industrial engineers are employed and productivity improvement and cost reduction are practiced in many companies using Industrial engineering philosophy, principles, methods, techniques and tools.

Value Engineering is the main method used for product industrial engineering. Design for manufacture and assembly is another method. Design for value is a new variant. Value management is a variant of value engineering. Variety reduction is a traditional technique still used for a big benefit.

How many industrial engineers can be employed in a company in productivity improvement/cost reduction activities?

For each 100 million dollars cost of production, there can be one MS IE and 6 BSIEs.

What is Industrial Engineering?

Industrial engineering is engineering to improve the productivity of engineering systems based on the studies and analysis of data collected during studies, experiments and operations. Many methods of industrial engineering are termed as studies - Process study, Method study, Motion study, Production study, Time study. Industrial engineering is closely associated with management, as its recommendation are implemented in operations as fast as possible and industrial engineers have to persuade and train other engineers, supervisors and operators in the new method as quickly as possible and realize the productivity and profit increase for the organization. Hence the management component of industrial engineering discipline is big in comparison to the management component of traditional engineers involved in design activities. The management component in engineering occupations in operations departments is always big.

The first president of ASME in his presidential address exhorted mechanical engineers to understand the relation between elements of engineering design and production and elements of cost accounting that determine the production cost as well as the life cycle cost of engineering items. Even though attention to cost was given by civil engineers earlier, the call by ASME president led to the emergence of a branch/discipline of engineering termed "Industrial Engineering." The branch was started by Prof Diemer at Penn State College, now known by the name Penn State University in 1908.

In ASME, another president stated the opinion that engineers have to learn accounting and management along with engineering to manage engineering organizations effectively. This call also led to the emergence of industrial management, works management, shop management, engineering management and technology management disciplines.

F.W. Taylor became the father of both the disciplines Industrial Engineering and Industrial Management.

Taylor's efforts to understand cost of production and reduce it gave rise to the concept of productivity improvement. Productivity is defined as output/input and if in an hour from a machine and man combination more output can be produced, productivity will be more and cost can be less. This led to experiments by Taylor to study the time taken for doing a job and to reduce the time taken by improving engineering.  Taylor offered his comments on various papers presented in the ASME conventions. He presented his first paper in 1893, wherein he narrated his data collection on the cost of belts and pulleys and how belt systems have to be designed to minimize life cycle cost of purchase cost of belts, operation cost and maintenance cost. He presented his paper on productivity improvement in the machine shop and other shops in 1895. He recommended the creation of a new department "Elementary Rate Fixing Department" whose job is to study every engineering element, its cost and the time taken to do the element. This department has the responsibility to modify the engineering to reduce the time taken for doing the engineering activity and for stating the time in which the activity can be done in the organization. Thus this department fixes the potential production possible in the company. This department is responsible for productivity improvement in the company. Taylor published shop management and scientific management in subsequent years.

Prof Diemer started the branch of Industrial Engineering to develop students in the philosophy, principles, methods, and techniques developed so far in the area of productivity improvement.

Industrial Engineering in Top 100 Global Manufacturing Companies

The list of top 100 global manufacturing was collected and was used to study the practice of industrial engineering, its objectives and methods in the companies. As a part of A to Z April 2020 Blogging Challenge, each day the practice of industrial engineering in some of these companies will be described. The rule of the challenge is to write an article on the company starting with alphabet "A" on the first day and "B" on the second day and so on for 26 days. In the first versions of these papers/articles, the focus is on locating industrial engineers working in the organization and advertisement for jobs in the areas of industrial engineering. The objectives and methods used by the company can be identified through the job descriptions given in the advertisements.

  7. I saw that A is for Apple so will definitely go with that one. I have used Apple Computers in schools since the Apple 2e and finally bought myself one "to last the rest of my life" in the mid 1990s. It didn't but I'm typing on one now. Will Toyota get a mention? We visited one of their factories last year in Japan. Looking forward to April.

  10. Fascinating resource to learn more. I first learned about industrial engineering while reading the story of revolutionary engineer, Lillian Gilbreth, and her contributions for motion studies, ergonomics, and human factors. Looking forward to learning about CISCO, Lockheed, Fijitsu in particular, but will be interested in other entries as well. Enjoy!

    1. Great comment. Thank you. Frank Gilbreth made very important contribution to productivity science of human effort and productivity engineering of human effort. Lilian assessed the psychology aspect of this productivity improvement methods and wrote positive things about it. She continued to advance the subject and teach it. I plan to develop the content step by step. I want to contact many industrial engineers working in these companies for information and shall add information as and when I get them. I am locating them first and giving their Linkedin profiles in my articles so that more interaction takes place among industrial engineers.

    1. Industrial engineering is an engineering branch which must be well known. But there are some shortcoming in how it is being practiced and promoted. Hope many A to Z bloggers will become aware of it this year. I am going to promote these posts in IE social media groups also because they are genuinely useful for them.
