Human Effort Industrial Engineering - Bulletin Board

Human Effort Industrial Engineering

Human Effort Engineering and Human Effort Industrial Engineering can be distinguished.

Human effort engineering is the job of process design engineers and engineering managers. - Narayana Rao

Human Effort Industrial Engineering tries to understand the speed with which a motion can be made with various loads and in various positions. It also tries to locate and eliminate motions which are not contributing to the completion of a task or activity. It tries to adjust locations of materials and tools so that distances of motion can be minimized.

Industrial Engineering is  System Efficiency Engineering.

Machine Effort Industrial Engineering and Human Effort Industrial Engineering are important components.

Interesting to note that the book "Motion Study" by Frank Gilbreth was published in 1911 along with Scientific Management and Principles of Industrial Engineering.

4 questions to ask before swapping out human labor for AI
byBetsy Vereckey Aug 23, 2023
Why It Matters
Generative AI is a worthwhile investment when humans are able to ask the right questions and easily evaluate the accuracy of the answers, MIT Sloan’s John Horton says.

How do you prioritize your human factors projects?

Human Work In the Age of Smart Machines Hardcover – October 6, 2020
by Jamie Merisotis (Author)

We are living through a time of upheaval and social unrest, with increasing threats to global health, democratic institutions, and the world’s economies. But behind the alarming headlines is another issue that must be quickly addressed: the role of workers is being transformed—and often rendered obsolete—by automation and artificial intelligence.

As Jamie Merisotis, the president and CEO of Lumina Foundation, argues in Human Work In the Age of Smart Machines, we can—and must—rise to this challenge by preparing to work alongside smart machines doing that which only humans can: thinking critically, reasoning ethically, interacting interpersonally, and serving others with empathy.

In Human Work, Merisotis, author of the award-winning 2015 book America Needs Talent, offers a roadmap for the large-scale, radical changes we must make in order to find abundant and meaningful work in the 21st century. His vision centers on developing our unique capabilities as humans through a lifetime of learning opportunities that are easy to navigate, deliver fair results, and offer a broad range of credentials—from college degrees to occupational certifications. By shifting long-held ideas about how the workforce should function and expanding our concept of work, he argues that we can harness the population’s potential, encourage a deeper sense of community, and erase a centuries-long system of inequality.

As the headlines blink red, now is the time to redesign education, training, and the workplace as a whole. Yes, many jobs will be lost to technology, but if we promote people’s deeper potential, engaging human work will always be available.

Advances in The Human Side of Service Engineering

Louis Freund, Wojciech Cellary
AHFE International (USA), 19-Jul-2019 - Technology & Engineering - 660 pages

If there is any one element to the engineering of service systems that is unique, it is the extent to which the suitability of the system for human use, human service, and excellent human experience has been and must always be considered. An exploration of this emerging area of research and practice, Advances in the Human Side of Service Engineering covers a broad spectrum of ergonomics and human factors issues highlighting the design of contemporary service systems.

Turning Men into Machines? Scientific Management, Industrial Psychology, and the “Human Factor”
Maarten Derksen
15.5University of Groningen

The conventional view that the increasing influence of psychologists and other social scientists "humanized" management theory and practice needs to be amended. Taylor's scientific management was not less human than later approaches such as Human Relations, but it articulated the human factor differently, and aligned it to its own instruments and practices. Further research into human behavior and modifications job designs are welcome, but Taylor need to be criticized for his innovations and insights.
