CNC MACHINE TOOLS AND MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS



The basic components of a numerical controlled machine tools are the program of instructions ( called the part program or G-code), the numerical or machine controller, servo drives and eedback devices  for each axis of motion.  The controller commands the servo drives to move the machine axes to drive the tool along the tool path specified in the part program. Both linear and rotary motions can be directed and controlled simultaneously.

Types of CNC Machines
There are two general classes of CNC machine tools.
CNC lathes or turning centers,  perform turning, boring, facing, threading, profiling, and cutoff operations.
CNC machining centers perform  milling, boring, drilling, and tapping.


CNC Lathes


In CNC lathes, multiple tools are held in a turret, which rotates and brings the specific tool to cut. The turret is commonly mounted on a slant bed slide, which sheds chips into the bottom of the machine. All CNC lathes have a headstock with spindle, and most have a tailstock. 

CNC automatics are similar to turning centers but include more axes, have provision for rotating tooling, and multiple slides and spindles.  These machines are multifunctional machines or mill-turn machines.   On CNC automatics, a job can be divided into segments and tools can work on
different areas of a workpiece simultaneously. Cycle times can thus be made shorter compared to CNC lathes.  CNC lathes and automatics are modern equivalents of cam-driven screw and bar machines, which they have largely displaced.

CNC Machining Centers

Machining centers are  classified by spindle orientation as vertical or horizontal and the number of axes controlled. On a vertical spindle machine, the workpiece is mounted on a horizontal bed;
on a horizontal spindle machine, the workpiece is usually mounted on a vertical fixture or table.  Vertical machines are preferred for large workpieces, flat parts, and especially for contoured surfaces in dies so that the thrust force is absorbed directly by the bed of the machine.

That thought was the impetus behind the OneBreath, the ventilator Callaghan invented with a small team of fellow Stanford biodesign students. The device is just a fraction of the cost of a low-end conventional ventilator, runs on a 12-volt battery for six to 12 hours at a time, and is smaller than a toolbox so it can be easily deployed wherever needed.

Callaghan started from scratch with a basic pressure sensor, typically used in devices like blood-pressure meters, that cost about $10.

Industrial engineers have to make process analysis and operation analysis as the main focus area and combine it with the product industrial engineering to analyze and improve the design of components that are processed in the operation under study and evaluation. Process improvement techniques like six sigma are implemented as part of process analysis. Material flow parameters like batch quantities are to be evaluated. Optimization at various levels from the entire enterprise to the element of each operation and appropriate economic analysis are to be done. The discoveries and data developed by ergonomists has to be incorporated into human work methods. Similarly, the growing knowledge of social sciences focusing on man and his relations needs to be incorporated into operating procedures.

Industrial engineers may be employed in dedicated product design and process planning teams. But here in answering this question, we are looking at IEs employed in operations to accumulate and understand the data generated in operations to improve the product design and process design on a continuous basis with the involvement of operators, foremen and engineers of the shop. Industrial engineering students during their course have to do projects both on case study basis as well as on real life problems focusing on productivity improvement and cost reduction. Operation analysis that examines each engineering element used in the operation (machine, cutting tool, work holding mechanism, cutting fluid, speed, feed, depth of cut, and other machine related parameters, work piece location as input and output, working conditions and operator movements, motions, safety devices) is the primary technique. Vibration is at the heart of a variety of common problems in machining holes. Mathematical analysis is helping to bring about a better understanding of hole-making processes...including how these vibrations behave, and what steps to take to bring them under control.

Importance of drilling:  Just one wing of a large jet aircraft may include 45,000 holes. Learning to machine these holes faster and with less tool wear would reduce the cost of machining. Learning to machine these holes rounder, straighter and smoother would reduce the cost of assembly.
