Once industrial engineers decide to recommend a new technology for adoption by their organization or they are informed that their organization is adopting a new technology based on the initiative by operating and technology departments, industrial engineering department must engage itself in developing the productivity knowledge related to the technology. Productivity science and engineering are two core knowledge areas.  Industrial engineers have to identify various measurable characteristics or attributes of the technology and find their effect on productivity of the technology. The productivity science of the technology thus obtained will give opportunities for productivity engineering to maximize the productivity or improve the productivity. The engineering challenges identified can be solved by IEs or they can be contracted to technology consultants or internal technology development engineers.
