The smart operation and maintenance center began operation in early 2016, and has been expanding in line with the development of China Baowu. The center provides technology support for Baosteel's multiple production bases.

A lot of work is done by robots. According to Baowu's 2018 corporate social responsibility (CSR) report, it has more than 480 robots and over 100 self-driving vehicles. It has some unmanned workshops and a mega unmanned warehouse.
In a smart cold-rolling workshop,one operator only works. The production process is usually carried out without illumination and is monitored remotely with screens. Abnormalities are detected automatically and correction are applied remotely.
Automation has slashed cost and improved work efficiency. In the smart hot-rolling workshop as an example, energy consumption is cut by 5 percent and cost by 20 percent, while increasing productivity by 20 percent.
