Information Technology Based Industrial Engineering - Business Process Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineering applicable to all engineering branches.

Whenever a new technology appears either as a product or as a process, application of IE in that technology and using that technology in IE of other technologies will start. It is the applied industrial engineering activity.

Thomas H. Davenport and James E. Short wrote an article in 1990 on "The New Industrial Engineering: Information Technology and Business Process Redesign."
https://sloanreview.mit.edu/article/the-new-industrial-engineering-information-technology-and-business-process-redesign/

They said "Those aspiring to improve the way work is done must begin to apply the capabilities of information technology to redesign business processes. Business process design and information technology are natural partners, yet industrial engineers have never fully exploited their relationship. The authors argue, in fact, that it has barely been exploited at all."

I know personally from the experience of 1979 itself that industrial engineers joined the IT sector in big numbers. But in 1990, Davenport and Short remarked that industrial engineers never exploited the relation between IT and business process. Why did it happen. It happened because IEs migrated to information technology to learn new skill and do new work. They have not entered IT sector to implement IE in that sector or to implement IE combined with IT in business processes.

The academic institutions of IE also have not followed Davenport and Short's insight. Even though Computers and Industrial Engineering Journal was started, it could not provide the necessary direction.

Industrial engineers have to develop IE is each specific technology on the following lines indicated in the area of machining technology. In each technology developing the focus area of IE is possible based on the engineering branch and knowledge applicable to that technology. In business processes, information technology is the main applicable engineering branch.
