What is Industry 4.0?

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is using data captured by sensors in products and manufacturing equipment, analyzing to get information and using that information to automatically start and stop machines that include robots to d manufacturing and maintenance operations. This will improve productivity, quality and maintainablity. It is a revolution in manufacturing technologies brought about by international networking between things that facilitate communication and action. So the productivity of man can further go up due more efficient and effective connected machine net work and standard of living of the people is expected to go up substantially. Some countries are in the forefront in this revolution already with number of patents and factories that implemented these technologies.

Changes in technology are the only source of permanent increases in productivity, but a number of transient factors can affect both true and "measured" productivity. For example, workers may work harder during periods of high demand and firms may use their capital assets more intensively by running factories for extra shifts; both factors can lead measured productivity to be too high relative to actual technological progress. Similarly, during periods of high demand, productivity can also rise due to increasing returns to scale. But,  the effect of transient factors is not permanent.

So permanent productivity improvement is brought about by engineering changes, procedure changes in service processes as well as management processes.

Industry 4.0 is offering number of new technologies and there technologies are to be incorporated into manufacturing and other engineering and business processes to increase effetiveness and efficiency. Management of incorporating the new technology and operating the redesigned facilities are also important to realize the benefits of Industry 4.0. Hence productivity engineering and productivity management also are involved.
