Olympus Optical manages costs throughout a product’s life cycle. To do so, the company deploys five major techniques: 

(1) target costing - IE for Cost Reduction to achieve target cost. (value engineering)

(2) product-specific kaizen costing - Product IE - DFMA

(3) general kaizen costing, - Process Industrial engineering

(4) functional group management - Creating profit centers for intermediate process chart stages.

(5) product costing. - Cost measurement at each stage of progress.
