F.W. Taylor started his industrial engineering initiatives with changes to cutting tools and machine tools. He discovered the role of cutting fluids in increasing tool life and cutting speed.

In the evolution of industrial engineering, attention to machines has become less. Efforts of IEs in the area human effort industrial engineering increased. Motion and Time Study is totally focused on study of human effort and comfort.

Nakajima did a service to industrial engineering by developing the concepts of total productivity maintenance and metric of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). The speed loss included in the OEE calculation is directly an issue of focus of industrial engineers. Industrial engineers can increase their focus on equipment related work and develop Overall Equipment Industrial Engineering (OEIE).

Important Questions in OEIE

1. Is the equipment used in the operation of a process the best one for purpose?

2. Do we need to replace the current machine in the factory with a better machine (Replacement decision either with a similar machine or an improved or modern machine)?

3. Is the machine provided with all the accessories necessary to get maximum productivity?

4. Is the machine working at all the steps specified for various drives? Can we use the full range of speeds available for work piece and tools?

5. Is the maximum speed specified to be used in the operation right?

6. Is the operator operating at the maximum speed specified for the part concerned?

Overall Equipment Effectiveness

Overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) is a key performance indicator used to measure equipment productivity. The purpose of this study is to review and analyze the evolution of OEE, present modifications made over the original model and identify future development areas.
