Setup time reduction is important for reducing batch quantities and move the system towards more lean manufacturing system.
Setup time of machine tools especially CNC machines is important. For each machining operation, setup time and cost are to be analyzed and effort has to be made to reduce them as opportunity is there.
Analysis Questions.
1. When was the last setup reduction study done?
2. What additional suggestions were implemented?
3. What additional modifications were done to reduce setup time?
4. Are there any new ideas to reduce setup time created through IE studies in the company and from outside information?
5. Is more mechanization possible?
6. Is more automation possible?

Tool Presetter or On-Machine Tool Probe? Top Shops use both, revealed a 2017 survey.
Tool Presetting: Tool Data is picked up and tools are preset in the Tool Room. The setup time is saved because it is now not part of the cycle time of making parts.
In the case of Tool Probes and Touchsetters, tool Data is picked up by sensors installed on the machine.
70.8% of Top Shops have Tool Probes on their machines versus 47% of Other Shops. 58.5% of Top Shops have presetting versus 35.7% of Other Shops.
Majority of Top Shops have both and are using either of them as the part demands to achieve saving in time.
