Industrial Engineering ONLINE Course Notes - Industrial engineering is system efficiency (productivity) engineering. Efficiency is a more broader concept than productivity. Productivity is output/input. Efficiency includes stakeholder satisfaction also. Any dissatisfaction in any stakeholder is inefficiency. IISE is a global professional association for productivity and efficiency professionals.
Lean Thinking is Productivity Thinking (23 July 2022) - Narayana Rao
Productivity Thinking - An Explanation
Productivity thinking aims at increasing the effectiveness of resources used to achieve an objective. It is inefficiency if the use of resources does not add to the effectiveness of the output as per plan or design. It is measured by a productivity measure called partial factor productivity. This is a ratio of output of the finished goods and the quantity of the resource used. Each increase in the resource used has to contribute adequately to the output of finished goods. Whenever an increment of resource is not adding to adequately to the output, incremental productivity decreases.
Productivity thinking of a manager includes becoming aware of body of knowledge of productivity science, productivity engineering and productivity management, thinking of the products and processes in the organization where they can be used to increase the productivity of the organization and using them appropriately to realize higher productivity in the form of reduced unit cost of goods or services produced. - Narayana Rao 8 November 2019
Ineffective use of an increment of a resource does not increase effectiveness of a process or an operation. This does not make a process or an operation ineffective but makes it inefficient. An increment of resource is being used but effectiveness is not increasing. That means waste of resources is taking place. Productivity thinking evaluates every increment of resource in various forms that is going into a process in terms of effectiveness that it is contributing to the objective or purpose of the process or the operation.
All persons in the company can be educated and trained to be productivity thinkers. Then they can spot the waste of resources and study the activity or operation or element of the operation to come out with an idea to reduce the waste. Many the waste of a resource is systemic, means it is similarly wasted in many other operations. Hence, preventing waste at one location can provide the opportunity to prevent waste at many other locations. Encouraging all employees to learn productivity thinking has helped Japanese companies to match US productivity.
The Production Function
The production function is the technical name given to the relationship between the maximum amount of output that can be produced and the inputs required to make that output. It is defined for a given state of technology.
It is the job of the industrial engineers and productivity engineers to increase the value of the production function for given combination of inputs by improving the technology. Productivity managers use the services of industrial engineers and productivity engineers as required for achieving the same objectives. Production managers or industrial managers can also do productivity improvement with the assistance of operators under them.
Low productivity is often the result of a mindset that thinks talent and experience are enough. They are necessary but not sufficient. Learning and effort are required to produce results in the future.
A growth mindset says: There is always more I could learn and develop my skills and abilities. I’m open to new ideas as science and based on science, engineering are expanding every day. I shall make effort to satisfy the requirements of today's customers with the new knowledge and skills.
The mindset you get from your people is the mindset you create in yourself. People mirror the actions and behaviours of their leaders. As a role model for your people, if you display a growth mindset and productivity thinking, it’s likely they will adopt one.

Productivity Thinking - Hamid Tohidi , Mohammad Mehdi Jabbari, Omid Tohidi
The variety of inputs and outputs divided into two quality and quantity groups, which should interact with each Productivity is a conception that establishes this relationship, so productivity thinking is to elevate and develop a system. Productivity as a positive perception considers the response method in a system. Finally, productivity aims to obtain the best result from submitting the correct activities. So the aim of productivity is not high production but gets a better result.

Comment by Alin Posteuca in a linkedin community: Or, it can be said that productivity thinking is a state of mind - at the individual level and especially at the group level.
ReplyDeleteMy reply.
ReplyDeleteI am thinking of an explanation and process similar to design thinking.
Further comment by Alin Posteuca in a linkedin community: However, the concept of "productivity thinking" should be approached in an output of a process per unit of time (to be effective - more precisely by eliminating not effectively used input or losses) and the minimization of input consumption should be addressed (to be efficient - more precisely by eliminating excess amount of input or waste).
ReplyDeleteThus, productivity thinking is the systematic and/or systematic redesign of processes for reducing or eliminating losses and waste to be truly effective and efficient.
