Honda - Hyundai - Industrial Engineering Activities and Jobs

Industrial Engineering - Productivity Improvement - Process Improvement - Product Redesign - Continuous Improvement

Industrial engineering is improvement in various elements of engineering operations to increase productivity. Along with engineering elements, industrial engineers evaluate and improve many other elements also as they are responsible for productivity and cost of items produced in a process. Through assignments of improving productivity and efficiency of information technology and software engineering processes, industrial engineers specializing in IT were given responsibility for business processes also. Thus industrial engineers with focus on various branches of engineering provide their services to companies and society to improve various elements of the products and processes on a continuous basis over the product life cycle. They are active in engineering or production-maintenance-service-logistic processes and business processes.

Productivity improvement always focuses on quality and flexibility issues as productivity improvement should not lead to any deterioration in quality or flexibility. Delivery and cost are always at the core of industrial engineering. Thus when QFCD paradigm came, that is attention to quality, flexibility, cost and delivery became prominent, many industrial engineers were given the responsibility of managing this function of continuous improvement.

Development of High Productivity and Low Cost Card-Edge Type ECU for Motorcycles - 20% Cost Reduction - Honda

Honda has been worked on fuel efficiency enhancement by applying fuel injection systems. To enhance productivity and reduce cost of ECU, application of the semiconductor production method has been started for printed circuits with edge connectors. The ECU developed  has a structure shielding the whole PCB package except the edge connector terminals. Thus, the waterproofness required for an ECU has realized, as a standalone component for  the first in the world by Honda. y). To achieve that, transfer molding dies equipped with a unique mechanism were developed. An epoxy resin that eliminates the after cure process was developed. Thus, productivity of 5 times over conventional was realized with a multi-cavity molding capable of moldings more than 10 pieces at a time. A new waterproof card-edge connector was also developed, in which a half pipe type terminal providing a stable contact resistance, even with a low contact pressure, and a slider structure that enables reliable coupling operations were adopted. A vibration resistance that exceeds conventional performances was realized, and ECU attachment/detachment in a narrow work space was made possible. The total cost of the ECU and the connector was reduced by 20%.

Honda Model Variety Reduction To Cut Costs, Boost Production Efficiency

MAY 08, 2019

The company realizes that it offers too many combinations in an effort to appeal to different regions, and this is decreasing production efficiency. The company has simplification/variety reduction plan for components by increasing parts sharing among products and improve production efficiency.

Honda expects the simplification to result in a 10 percent reduction in global production costs by 2025. Product development would require 30 percent fewer manhours, the manpower diverted to research and development of new technology. Honda has big plans for technology development in new vehicle concepts.
